Hundreds of electric bikes said to have been procured by Oyo state government have been dumped at the premises of local government service commission of the state.
According to our reporter who visited the state secretariat on Wednesday, the bikes out of which some were said to have been picked by some members of the commission are still there, and not dispatched to those it might have been procured for.
One of the commission’s staff who pleaded anonymity told our newsmen that they have earlier been informed that the electric bikes will be given to them ins subsidized prices, as a form of support to the junior staff. However, this might have changed overnight as they are yet to receive any information from the directors on when the official handing over will be done.
Another source said there was a directive from the office of the local government and chieftaincy matters that the bikes should not be distributed until further notice.
This might be unconnected with the recent political happenings in the state, which might have prompted the commissioner in charge of the commission to halt the process to avoid another ripples within their political camps.
You will recall that few months ago, some of these bikes were given to ward chairmen and some party members of the ruling party.
One of the junior workers in the ministry lamented that the bikes might have been hijacked for political campaign, and we may not hear anything about it again until 2027.
